Explore evocative filming locations including Culross, Doune Castle, and Linlithgow Palace; visit Jamie Fraser’s family home at Midhope Castle; and even pause at the atmospheric Tuilyies Standing Stones.

Walk through Outlander history

Departing Edinburgh in the morning, your vehicle heads north across the Firth of Forth towards the Tuilyies Standing Stones, enigmatic monoliths reminiscent of the mystical stones in Outlander, marking the threshold where travellers might slip through time.

From here, after perhaps a few playful attempts at time travel, we continue to the Royal Burgh of Culross. This beautifully preserved village offers a rare glimpse into 17th-century Scotland. Fans will recognise its cobbled lanes and ochre-hued buildings as Claire’s herb garden and the Mercat Cross in Cranesmuir.

We then travel onward to Doune Castle (optional extra), the imposing medieval fortress that served as Castle Leoch, home to Clan MacKenzie. You may also recognise it from Game of Thrones and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. En route, you’ll enjoy views of mighty Stirling Castle, perched dramatically on volcanic rock, one of Scotland’s most significant historic strongholds.

Relax in Linlithgow

Your journey continues south to the Royal Burgh of Linlithgow, where you will have time for lunch and the opportunity to visit Linlithgow Palace (optional extra), the filming location for Wentworth Prison in Outlander. Once a favourite royal retreat, the palace offers sweeping views across its tranquil loch and parkland.

Visit Lallybroch and Blackness Castle

In the afternoon, we travel to Blackness Castle (optional extra), known as “the ship that never sailed” thanks to its distinctive, sea-facing shape. In Outlander, it stood in for Fort William, the formidable headquarters of Black Jack Randall. From its ramparts, enjoy views towards Edinburgh and the three iconic bridges that span the Firth of Forth

Our final stop varies with the season. During summer, we continue to Midhope Castle (optional extra), the 16th-century tower house that brought Lallybroch to life on screen, Jamie Fraser’s beloved family home. Enjoy time to explore, take photographs, and soak up the atmosphere (Jamie sightings not guaranteed, but always hoped for).

If Midhope is closed for filming, or during winter months, we instead visit the Forth Bridges, three remarkable feats of engineering representing three centuries of innovation, gracefully connecting Fife with the Lothians.

Your private Outlander experience concludes with a relaxed journey back to Edinburgh, where you may choose to explore the city further.
